So, we hosted a brunch last weekend to officially launch our new websites. We welcomed friends to join us for an afternoon celebrating growth, progress, and the launch of MVMT, parent of my company Parallel MVMT.

This was our 2009 version of Saying Hello, and used it as a chance to say “Thank You,” as well as present a set of services and benefits being offered by our team and partners. The buffet was provided by Wafles & Dinges, including an assortment of Belgian Waffles & lots of homegrown love.

The video above was created by Eric Camins, Eli Jacobs-Fantauzzi & Mikey 1soul

Watching the video on vimeo, enjoying the photos provided by Mikey 1Soul, Toofly & others, as well as reading the blog posts and editorial this generated, made me feel as if we really did have our own media network. Who needs a feature on Fox 5 News, when you can reach a few thousand people in a way that was both meaningful and relevant using your own network?

Fortunately, most of this feedback was captured in Facebook. See them here.

My personal favorite moment was when a young boy (about 9 years old), raised his hand and asked “So, you’re saying I can work on my computer?,”after listening to my entire speech about our growth, and the many people who have contributed etc., etc.,

I was super inspired.

It was super fun.

Hey everyone,

Trust this will find you well.

I wanted to share some good news.

Today, I began the first of many “Executive Coaching Sessions” with Jullien Gordon, founder of Mylinia.com & Driving School for Live.

The executive team over at Parallel MVMT, decided to invest in me receiving some personalized professional development over the next few months, along my path of becoming my best self. Thanks Team!

Executive Coaching?

I think every small business owner, and/or start up executive would benefit by prioritizing receiving some sort of formal “Executive Coaching or Consulting.”

Especially those who participate in “Knowledge or Passion Work.” Often times, this work demand such a high level of external analysis and action, that it can be both refreshing and grounding to have someone .

Well, let me tell you.

Imagine how well your company/organization would perform if its overall purpose was succinct, every employee had their own purpose statement (instead of just a job description) and every team member used their passions daily?

That’s basically why I enrolled. I want to be my best self, and look at ways to improve my ability to coach and add value to the lives of the people in my community.

Many communities have flourished by ensuring that its’ people have access to direct guidance and cultivation. I often pride myself on having a “Knowledge of Self, Determination” & “You Must Learn,” perspective, and so I’ve always valued the contributions made by my many mentors, great friends and various elders who became parental figures.

I believe in good guidance, and it’s even better when that guidance is coming from someone who is genuinely committed to making the world a better place.

Here is a play list of Jullien’s 8 Principles of Purpose, the core of his teaching philosophy:

Hey Everyone,

Trust this will find you well.

So I’m doing a class in NYC this week. Normally I travel across the country giving this class, but I’m really happy that Third World Newsreel & The Hip-Hop Association is giving me an opportunity to do this work here in NY (my hometown).

I’ll be hosting a technOrganzing workshop this Wednesday at the Third World Newsreel/Hip-Hop Association office. It starts at 6:30pm. I’ve attached a pretty good overview, as well as some videos. I go into detail and show examples during the workshop.

There is a small fee in the form of a donation to Third World Newsreel, but it’s very inexpensive. Also, the first 3 people that RSVP, get in for free (actually with a donation made by me on your behalf).

There are only 25 seats. Fast & Parallel MVMT might help you get in the class.

Peace.

—-

Technorganize = the approach of using technology to organize information and resources.

Next Community Class :: Wednesday - April 30, 2008 - 6:30pm - 8:30pm - RSVP Here.

Watch A Pre-Class Overview :: Watch Here.

–

Reason :: Being such a mobile person, I use new technology to give me greater control over how I find, use & share information and resources. I call this effort “technOrganizing.” It was actually named by the honorable George “rithm” Martinez during one of our many trips to Anchorage, Alaska.
From basic to brilliant, I appreciate an ability to be extremely productive. I regularly explore the benefits of using technology to organize information and resources over traditional approaches. Rather than organizing based on “everything has it’s place, so put it there” I subscribe to “decide how you would like everything to be found.”

Inspiration :: There are many pioneers who are normalizing the use of new technology to increase productivity, time management and collaboration. There is an art of getting this knowledge to the masses; TechnOrganizing is that art.
In the spirit of the pioneers who utilized new technology to create art (DJ, Aerosol Artist & Producer), I work to demystify using the new age of Web 2.0 / Office 2.0 online services instead of desktop applications, and detail how storing data online rather than onto one’s desktop or laptop hard drive can help with the overall effectiveness and value of the information being created, stored and/or distributed among their communities.

Hey Friends,

So, we’ve launched a search for the ultimate intern called, “Paid With Perks.”

After interning and volunteering for several years of my life, I personally understand both the pros and cons of the intern/volunteer experience.

Amazing, this little app I tell you. It’s called Simplify Media.

Simply, it allows me to share my entire iTunes library with my other computers, my co-works and my friends, in like 5 minutes. Wow.

After trying nearly every kind of service there is to sync my music libraries across computers and online communities, I feel good with this one. Here is quick bit of information to help you understand why I love this app.

1. I love music. I listen to copious amounts of it, and I want to always listen to copious amounts of it. Online communities are cool, but nothing beats my own personal collection of music I often get directly from the artists themselves. Yes, it’s really personal.

2. I like to keep my laptop harddrive empty (meaning, I don’t like to use up a lot of space on it, so that it runs faster.) I am active reader and believer in IT Redux / Office 2.0

3. My friends are always asking me to listen to my music, because I get so much of it (call me popular man with music.)

4. I want to stream music to my iPhone and iTouch without having to download the music directly to the device. Yes, for all you music rippers, it is possible (note: support artists, but their music… directly from them though.)

Example 1: Kolks Man Music

Example 2: Rock Man Music

So, go and download Simplify Media, and look for me.

My username is rolandobrown.

We no longer only make songs we make statements.
Forgive us, if these statements are more freestyles than anything, and more importantly if they are not as eloquent as Jay’s.

–

So,

Statement 1: I really watch movies and listen to albums. American Gangster made my list.

Many of us, many of you, rather many people have stopped actually watching movies in full and listening to entire albums. I’m not sure if its because of a general lack of interest in the artists that are producing film and music, a shift in people purchasing more single songs than full albums, or my lack of connection to the “underground community” of people who really revel at the opportunity to know a film in and out or listen to an entire album, front to back, first track to last. I have lots of ways of watching films and listening to albums. I won’t bore you, but I will share.

For every “Gangster Film” I entertain watching, I see it at least 3 times, working carefully to understand the importance of the characters. For every Jay Z album, I always wait a while before actually listening to the album. Jay’s albums have sat on my desk for weeks before I open them (yes, I still buy music too.)

I always let the smoke pass, allow the advertising to settle, before I really sit down and just press play. I’ve just recently both watch the movie and listened to the entire album. Outside of really appreciating the opportunity this give us for critical dialogue, I am overall conflicted by my emotions and opinions of the value of this effort to tell these stories. I mean Frank Lucas walked out to Public Enemy in the Movie, and Jay Z has a ridiculous amount of double entendres that have both historical and metaphorical value, still its again another addition to the hundreds of big picture, or straight to DVD films, having been produced on this particular subject; the success and ultimate downfall / detriment of our American Gangsters. In an earlier post, I wrote: “It was never the gangster that people were mad at. It was the negativity, the youth losing their lives over the ideas they embraced, and not for revolution, or growth, but for material wealth. I’ve long struggled with the idea of what was the best way to describe to people why this was intricately linked. A simply good man in Hip-Hop would always do far less than a Good man who had muscle. That was what I always saw in Malcolm. The reformed gangster, not the gangster who got rich and continued to destroy himself and the community… What was my role?”

This is what I’m questioning now. This is what I would assume Jay is questioning. This is what I hope someone on the set of American Gangster was anticipating.

Statement 2: I am not as prepared to make this statement as I would like to be, but we need more Hero’s.

Though this inability has not stopped our community from making statements before. So, this is not immature, its just not as worked through as I would like it to be. Still, here goes.

It is one the most difficult things to explain right now, my swaying in emotion and opinion (both frustrated and in favor of) the telling of our communities stories. I often ask people who are excited by movies like American Gangster, if these are our only hero’s. If these are the only stories worthy of mass distribution? Is this our only Blue Magic? Have we no more? Is this our only blues, and our only magic, the perfection of Gangster?

If I say the whole hood says yes to that question, I feel a fraud, a liar even, knowing the many other heros that also gave us turkeys on thanksgiving and gifts on christmas (anyone who says that’s crazy, hasn’t grown up where I have). I remember being one of those kids in the street, thankful for being remembered. And though, I could feel as if these stories of our American Gangsters are the only ones American is interested in really telling, I remember others, rather refuse to not take those hero’s into consideration when asking this question. Who are our hero’s? What is there place in our legacy?

I could say it in a cliche way. I could say that in the brick building that built me there were more stories of street entrepreneurs like Barry Blue, Chino and Knowledge Build, than there were stories of the countless of mothers, teachers and community activists that we admired.

But this wouldn’t be true. We admired many. Many, many, both wonderful and the worst. We admired many, championed many, because in some way, maybe in many ways, we understood that though we couldn’t perpetuate those actions that hurt our community, we also could never offer those trespassers up to a system that we don’t trust in the first place. These stories just never made it to the movies.

Its difficult too because you then begin to think about all the people who had opportunities to really add value to our communities before Crack hit, and the many chances they missed, were unequipped for, and or merely incapable of living to realize. This is difficult to discuss, primarily because it is difficult to live, live through and/or remedy, this problem of drugs and violence in our communities. And though there are answers, those answers aren’t always helpful. One answer in particular I hear often that doesn’t help is, “we did what we had to do.”

Again, I don’t have the language to describe exactly the way this feels like right now, but I have recorded a quick little video to help work through it. Sometimes its easier for me to talk than it is to write, especially late nights like this. Here is a video. This is how it has been top of mind recently though:

Statement 3. American Gangster Can Be Remixed, Refined, Redone.

Nick James from Oakland, CA is an incredible producer. He remixed the American Gangster album. And it’s a great remix. Listen to this version of the album allowed me to listen to Jay Z’s lyrics in another way.It made his words more clear, and I was in many instances able to hear him more than the music.

Again, many of us don’t actually listen to albums anymore, and so I can’t trust that many people even listen to lyrics anymore. I can say Nick has made it much easier to appreciate the complexity of Jay’s lyrics by bringing to Jay a series of equally complicated music.

The American Gangster remix, The American Producer, allowed me to at least really listen to the questions Jay Z was asking of his listeners, if not himself as well.

You can download it here.

That’s all for now.

Hey,

To all of my fellow cultivators…

My folks over at Pinger just went public. Check them out. I’ve used them for a few days to get my voicemail from my T-Mobile account visually. It’s been a big HELP!

What does that mean?

Well, if you get anywhere as many voicemail as I do, then you can visualize this.

Scenario 1:
You’ve been in meetings all day, or on the train, or at lunch. You return to 6 - 16 voicemail’s in your inbox.

You know not who these messages are from, just that you have six. You go through message 1 - 4, good but not as important as message 5, which had you hear before message 3, you would have hung up an called them back write away.

It would be great to be able to see in a visual inbox, much like GMAIL:

Message1 - Bill collector / You’ve Been Approved for a New CC.
Message2 - Someone heard you were what they needed in their life.
Message3 - Long lost friend.
Message4 - 12 - You better be at my party, or my housewarming, or sneaker launch, or graduation, or whatever would benefit from your presence.
Message13 - Potential client. Said they need a proposal in 30mins.
Message14 - Family, telling you they miss you.
Message15 - Client, big priority.
Message15 - Business partner saying something that inspires you to continue the day.

Now, it’s one thing to take 15 mins to listen to every message. It’s another thing to be able to with one click go directly to… (I’m not even saying who I would call back first. You all won’t catch me there. Not al all. lol)

Scenario 2:
You leave your actual phone at home when you rush out of the house in the morning to avoid being late. You all day, dial into your phone using a landline in order to check your messages. Wow. That is the worst feeling.

It would just be great to get the voicemail’s to your email, right?

–

Well, my friends over at Pinger have found a solution.
And, a mad important detail, it’s free.

Check them out.
Tell them that Grow sent you.
Ohh, add me to your contact list.

by Kamilah DugginsWhen Sarah Kolker was generating ideas for her Create Change project, a few criteria topped the list. She wanted to use the opportunity to include youth; use her mentor, Isaiah Zagar’s method of mosaic tiling, and whatever she made, she wanted to build it in her Harlem neighborhood, a place where change of varying proportion is gaining momentum as quickly as the properties there are being spruced up and the local business are going down.Since the early 1990s, Harlemites have been bracing themselves for the fight against gentrification and its nasty side effects, including displacement, increased property taxes, spiked rents and loss of small business. So as you walk down the streets of what some are beginning to call the New Harlem (or New Harlem Renaissance), a bare piece of land pierced with signs indicating the name and number of the owner is not an uncommon site; if you walk a few blocks in almost any direction, you’re bound to come across at least one.Overwhelmed with constant sightings last summer, Sarah decided to investigate. She wanted to know exactly what these developers had planned for the neighborhood. “I would call these numbers that were on the signs attached to the land, and no one would answer, or someone would answer and not be able to tell me what was being done with it,” she says. No one in the neighborhood, not residents or business owners could furnish even a guess. “All that vacant land,” she says, in frustration, “and no one knew what was happening.”Sarah, a 21-year-old senior at Sarah Lawrence College, saw this lack of interest as a possible sign of battle fatigue, and felt it symbolized a diminished sense of ownership among the long-time residents. Leading a team of children in a public art project that was for and about them seemed a possible antidote to the apathy—figuratively and literally. Says Sarah: “I wanted to give ownership back to them by allowing them to build in their own community.” So in May 2007, she and about 17 young people from the Association to Benefit Children and the Pelham Fritz Recreation Center began the months-long process creating two mosaic tile benches made from donated and found objects. The dangerous elements like cutting glass were left up to Sarah, but the youth, who ranged from age 8-13, wrote their own quotes, baked the tiles and broke them into pieces. The tiles were later emblazoned with images of local heroes, like Malcolm X, and affirmations that reflect a profound clarity:“Stop hating, start loving from your heart.”“Breathe. Relax. Meditate. Now Elevate.”“Let your third eye open.””Create. Innovate. Spread Knowledge.”“Breathing positivity.”“Keep your head up.”When was the last time you felt this uplifted while doing a load of whites?Within a few months, the bench came together, but it was not a simple kids + teacher + materials=bench formula. Despite significant campaigning with several local arts and education organizations, residents weren’t as participatory as Sarah had hoped, the kids who helped during the summer weren’t able to come back to finish the benches once school started, and months into the project, Sarah and her assistants still hadn’t found a Laundromat that would house the bench. The latter problem is something Prince E. Hunt, co-owner of the Laundry Room, where one of the benches is currently housed, found perplexing. “I thought it was surprising that few people would agree to support it,” says Prince, who had read a Daily News article about the Laundromat Project a few weeks prior to meeting Sarah. When she approached Prince, he and co-owner, George Michaels, felt it was something they had to do.“It’s good for the community,” says Prince, who’s had the Laundromat there just over one year, “washing clothes can be kind of dull, now, people have something to look at and discuss while they wash clothes—it’s quite a conversation piece.Ironically, just before we met Sarah, [my partner and I] were talking about how we needed a bench out front because people kept stealing our chairs.”And because it sits outside the Laundromat, the bench inspires questions and inspection from a spectrum of passers-by, including neighborhood kids and tourists, who stroll past after eating at the nearby Amy Ruth’s or visiting the historic Canaan Baptist Church.“As I was finishing the bench in front of the Laundromat, [the neighborhood kids] were very interested to know what I was doing,” Sarah recalls. “It’s good for them to know that youth their own age made this because otherwise, [making art] will continue to be foreign to them–like creating something like this is outside their realm of possibility.”Like many urban centers across the country undergoing the reconstructive surgery that is revitalization, Harlem is a neighborhood cloaked in a legacy that affirms African Americans’ achievements, enterprise, culture and self-determination.Now that it’s some of the city’s most fertile ground for financial gain, one wonders, when they’ve seen these plans through, what will be the legacy of the New Harlem? What will become of the Harlem residents who don’t factor into ‘their’ plans?Where will they live? And what or who will the wave of this second renaissance cast aside? No one knows for sure. But one thing Sarah is firm on, something to which anyone who’s ever moved to a new place can attest, is that beautifying your space with images that reflect who you are makes it feel a little more like yours.“As people become more and more disenfranchised, art becomes more important because it helps them take ownership of what’s theirs,” says Sarah.Unlike the endless condominiums and other signs of Uptown revitalization, “with the mosaic, people can see it wasn’t just something dropped in on them–people from the community created it in the community. I think that’s hopeful.”If you want to see, touch or sit on the benches, and you live in NYC, you’re only a train ride away. One is located in front of The Laundry Room at 116th and Lenox. The other is housed at Pelham Fritz Recreation Center, which is located at 122nd Street and Mount Morris Park West in Marcus Garvey Park. Call 212-860-1380 for hours of operation.

[to rolando's creative agency]

What does one say on the very first few days of a new year,
after having one year prior promised to Combat The Mundane?

One says, Hello.

Hello.
In 2007, the Parallel MVMT began to move and move things.
In brief, we started.

As an creative agency we sought to defined ourselves and our business,
going from one project to the next, and in the process
solidified a new team, a new office, a new set of extraordinary Parallels,
discovered a vast array of MVMT makers and secured a set of extra ordinary clients.

In 2008, we’re proud to announce having been selected as the Agency of Record for the following clients; The People’s DP [www.thepeoplesdp.com], Toofly NYC [www.tooflynyc.com], Kahlil Almustafa [www.kahlilalmustafa.com], & Freshetic [www.fresthetic.com].

All have a talent for pushing towards innovation & progress. We’ve partnered with them over the next year, and will be aiding in their day-to-day business development and management.

Also, we’ve launched our TechnOrganizing™, Parallel Catalyst & T-Shirt On Demand services. With this launch, we’ve been chosen to serve as the 2008 technOrganizing™ Agency of Record for the Hip-Hop Theater Festival [www.hiphoptheaterfest.org], the Downtown Staten Island Council [www.downtownsi.com], and the Anchorage Urban League Young Professionals [www.nul-anchorage.org].

And yes, we’re now taking applications for the 6 community based organizations that will receive a suit of pro-bono services in 2008. Deadline is February 15. Awards will be announced on March 15.

We’re excited for a new year. Let’s make the pendulum tip towards progress.

Oh, the new office is on 1133 Broadway New York, NY 10010 Room 1028,
stop by.

Say Hello to 2008.
